This year the Association has selected a charity partner that allows for a direct and tangible result with respect to the funds donated.
Emerson School is a specialist school located in Dandenong, Victoria, catering to students with mild intellectual processing difficulties. From an initial enrolment of less than 100 students in 1973, Emerson has grown to be one of the leading providers of specialist education in Victoria, with 100 staff now supporting 400 students to achieve their potential.
Students between the ages of 16 and 18 inclusive are members of the Senior School at Emerson. The focus the Senior School is vocational pathways.
The main focus in the senior years is to provide students with vocational skills that will help them obtain work post school. Students are encouraged to participate in a School Based Apprenticeship (SBAT) in the vocational areas of Food Processing, Warehousing or Horticulture. This allows the students to gain a nationally recognised qualification and participate in real paid work in a supported environment. The school’s training provider for the SBAT’s is National Food Institute, who provide their highly skilled trainers to train Emerson students. This is an exceptional program which not only provides the students with transferable skills in the workplace but also increases skills such as confidence, resilience and independence. A good proportion of students go on to secure mainstream employment.
Next year Emerson School hopes to increase their SBAT offering to include a Certificate II in Food Processing to be run at the school to meet the needs of the families that are still hesitant to embrace the travel to and from work. To offer this program, the school requires the addition of some equipment in the training kitchen. The Association of Independent Funeral Professionals (AIFP) has selected Emerson School the opportunity to be our charity of choice to raise funds for the equipment for their new program.
Increasing the SBAT offering in Food Processing will allow a minimum of another 12 students to be able to take advantage of this program. This may also allow some students who don’t yet have independent travel skills to access the program as this will be facilitated on school grounds. Emerson School want to encourage and give every young person the best opportunity possible to build their capacity and have the skills to be able to live a full life which includes the opportunity to work.
Emerson School have already expressed their appreciation of the Association’s generosity and supporting this fantastic program. Every ticket sold to the conference contributes to this donation.
Emerson is a great school where young people with intellectual disabilities get given as many opportunities as possible. These funds this will help them increase the ability to expand the program and increase the number of students in the program which will in turn increase the number of students with real work skills entering the work force.
